More Is More
Less Is More
(More+Less)×Masculinity Tailoring=Louis Vuitton Tomboy Supremacy
The new Louis Vuitton fashion show by Nicolas Ghesquiere was sensationally amazing. With feminist ideology, combination of maximalism and minimalism, and bold designs, the new Fall Winter 22 collection is eye opening.
Opening with a look of shirt and tie, tailored trousers, and a masculine cut oversized leather jacket, it set the tone of this fashion show, ground breaking, hermaphrodite, maximalist, also minimalist. Bringing both maximalism and minimalism is creative, eye opening and bold, but it isn't easy. Nicolas Ghesquiere uses both intricate design and simple structures to make it a reality. With the electrical modern music in background, hinting the collection if for modern women, to explore themselves and express their confidence, ideologies, and individualities.
With gender inequality in the world, having feminism as an idea this fashion show's model all look comfortable in those clothes which hints women should feel comfortable, with themselves, the general environment or what they're wearing, and they have the right to feel comfortable as they should have the freedom to.
Introducing masculine tailoring to, and infusing menswear design with womenswear has not been rare, from tweed introduced by Chanel to YSL's suits, luxury fashion houses have been pioneers on gender-bending designs. And Nicolas' new show is definitely one of those iconic eye opening design feasts.
From the show, freshly illustrated oversized suits with classic wide leg tailored pants, the masculine designs are powerful, bold and sexy. The gender-bending designs represents the comfortability that women should be able to feel about themselves and everything around.
The combination of maximalism and minimalism is through the whole show, with pieces of more is more, and less is more, present the fusion of both is truly magical. Many looks features sole or two deep coloured knitted dresses or shirts pairing with pairs of simple sole coloured shiny leather boots to express the simplicity of the designs.
But that's not all, Nicolas pairs the looks with colourful sequined dresses over the entire look to make them even more chic, bold and vivid. Those sequined dresses are the amazing representations of Louis Vuitton's more than a hundred years savior faire. The craftiness of those dresses are standing out with the complex embroideries and creative use of different materials. With a scarf infused design, those dresses aren't the usually chic dresses you would expect from a sequined design, they're chic but modern and playful.
The accessories in the show was also included with retro designs. With historical prints that's in metallic gold and floral, the classic monogram bags are having a new style. The design reminisces the 17th century French royal court clothes patterns and style, infusing the modern design with a hint of history. From garment bags, new shaped Keepall, and newly added soft trunk with long top handles which is playful and chic, all the bags're having golden floral historic touch.
Without retro and historical elements it won't be a Nicolas Ghesquiere's Louis Vuitton Fashion Show. This one is also packed with retro elements from decades to centuries ago. From the flannel tailored pants to long floral flowing ties that echoing 70s and 80s, the retro elements adding vintage styles to the looks making them more fun and chic.
There're two looks with belted harnessed pants drawing all the attention. They are creative, they're funky, they're sexual, they're retro. A design that changes how you picture pants or harnesses, infusing the formal and fun, and normalising the uncommon.
Petite Malle bags are a Louis Vuitton classic, in the show, Nicolas giving them a new twist. With a soft leather middle extra material, he keeps the chic structure of the bags but expending more space of the bag to enlarge their capacities with a playful shape.
Shoes from this show are very diverse but all having the idea of feminism. Every design look confident and comfortable. From minimalist leather boots to canvas boots with simple colours. From open toes designed formal derby shoes to strap sandals in Chelsea boots shape. The designs are merging classic feminine designs of shoes with men's shoes structures, they're chic, fun and masculine.
The dramatic bracelets and multi-coloured metal necklaces are jaw dropping. Bold jewelries are not uncommon for Louis Vuitton, but this collection's are truly eye opening, with asymmetrical designs, the bracelets and the necklaces all look individually different hinting the representation of individuality.
Another jaw dropping show by Nicolas Ghesquiere, bring feminism and equality through clothes. The collection also giving more vitality to the more than one hundred years fashion house, presenting it's undeniably progressive ideas, savior faire and innovativeness.
The tomboy or masculinity elements in the show is fun and fabulous but it's far more than just that, it's progressive, it's awakening and it's a call out to all the inequality in the world.
